MPs to head panels to monitor rural projects

"Orders in this regard would be issued soon," Joshi said amid thumping of desks by members. Members had long been demanding that they be made chief of the monitoring committees set up to check the progress of various rural development projects being undertaken at the district level. Joshi also said he will convene a meeting of leaders of political parties later this month on suggestions to improve the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. When Anant Geete (Shiv Sena) wanted use of machines to be allowed in some NREGA projects, Joshi rejected the suggestion saying that only manual labour was allowed under the scheme. The minister said other rural development schemes could be dovetailed with NREGA for use of machines in completion of certain projects like building of village roads.
